Programs for Sustainable CitiesThe International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives is an association of local governments dedicated to the prevention and solution of local, regional, and global environmental problems through local action. ICLEI operates the International Centre for Sustainable Cities. It promotes many programs related to CP. The Local Government Environmental Assistance Network is a forum and clearinghouse of environmental information for local government. It is a program of the International City/County Management Association, a professional and educational organization representing appointed managers and administrators in local governments throughout the world. The International Environmental Technology Centre includes programs on urban environmental management and technology The Sustainable Cities Programme is a joint UNCHS/UNEP programme. It works towards the development of a sustainable urban environment, building capacities in urban environmental planning and management, and promoting a broad-based participatory process. The Sustainable Communities Network is a major portal to related topics and programs. UNDPs Public-Private Partnerships for the Urban Environment programme helps bring together government, private business and civil society to pool their resources and skills to address the urban environmental challenges of the 21st century. The UN Urban Environmental Information Gateway has city State of the Environment reports and reporting guidelines on line The Urban Environment Forum is a global coalition of cities and international support programmes working in the urban environment The Bremen Initiative for Sustainable Cities Partnerships promotes public-private partnerships for sustainable cities. The International Healthy Cities Foundation is a progam to bring people, issues and resources together in order to support the development of Healthy Cities initiatives. The World Health Organization also has a Healthy Cities program. International Urban Development Association is an international association of public and private organizations, government agencies, business and individuals dedicated to promoting and improving urban and regional development. International Union of Local Authorities promotes and unites democratic local governments. International Society of City and Regional PlannersThe World Association of the Major Metropolises focuses on the biggest cities. The Sustainable Cities Project is managed by the European Community and contains policy guidance, research findings and resources. It is related to Campaign Interactive, which supports transfer of knowledge and exchange of experience in the field of urban sustainability and Local Agenda 21 in Europe. Florida Sustainable Communities Center is an electronic network for communities participating in the Sustainable Communities Demonstration Program. Livable Communities is a US federal program to coordinate federal agencies' efforts to assist communities to grow in ways that ensure a high quality of life and strong, sustainable economic growth. The Institute for Sustainable Communities works in Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia. The Green Communities Association is a good model for hands-on action. The US Clean Cities Partnership promotes alternative fuels to reduce air pollution. Sustainable Cities Initiative of Canada completed an extensive report available on their site. Sustainable Seattle is a pioneering organization. Environmental Policy Group of the Council of State Governments has policy research on sustainable communities. The Resource Renewal Institute supports the development and implementation of green plans for countries and communities. The Local Government Commission is a California-based forum and technical assistance site to enhance the ability of local governments to create and sustain healthy environments, healthy economies, and social equity. Urban Ecology is a non-profit founded in 1975 that promotes cities that are ecologically thriving and socially just. Center of Excellence in Sustainable Development is supported by the US Department of Energy CLEAN CITIES 2000 of the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission describes what member cities are doing to improve the environment Neighborhoods Online is a resource center for people working to build strong communities throughout the United States.The Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) in Chicago is a non-profit organization that helps build prosperous, sustainable communities by linking economic and community development with ecological improvement. The University of Northumbria has established a Sustainable Cities Research InstituteThe Green Communities Assistance Kit from US EPA is a primary resource. It is packaged as a step-by-step guide for planning and implementing sustainable actions. Extensive resources and links are described. Sustainable Communities Resource Package from Ontario is a practical guidebook. Community-Based Environmental Protection from US EPA also has lots of resources. The UN Best Practices Database has over 600 examples of urban sustainability projects. Sustainable USA also has a projects database.The Virtual Library on Urban Environmental Management is a big collection of resources and links. The Environmental Sustainability Kit is a good primer for communities from the Environmental Defense Fund. The US EPA's Municipal Solid Waste Factbook has a wealth of information related to waste prevention. EPA has a whole site devoted to MSW. City-specific links for sustainability programs Linking Sustainable Community Activities to Pollution Prevention: A Sourcebook is an excellent report. Several other Sustainable Development Discussion Groups exist. The Municipalities ISO 14001 project produced a report on EMS implementation in participating cities. Software for Small Communities includes Environmental Planning for Small Communities (Trilogy) software is a major production from US EPA that leads users through the entire planning process. Other topics include Alternatives for Unsewered Communities and Municipal Wastewater Treatment Diagnostic Planner A software tool for envisioning future urban scenarios, called QUEST, is available for free from the Sustainable Development Research Institute at the University of British Columbia. Other good tools are also available via the site. The Ultimate Guide to Municipal Pollution Prevention Legislation has direct links to cities' regulations. Asian Sustainable Cities ProgramsAPEC Network on Sustainable Cities got started in 1997 and held a symposium at the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand in 2000. It was partly sponsored by the Human Settlements Development Programme, a portal to sustainable cities in Asia that includes a Best Practices Initiative with many examples and a discussion forum. The City Development Strategies Initiative is focused on sustainable urban development and includes a discussion forum and a Mayors' Network. The Asia Pacific Cities Forum works with a number of Asian cities to promote sustainability. Unfortunately the web address has been reassigned - check back for updates! APEC Virtual Center for Environmental Technology Exchange includes a nice section on municipal solid waste management as well as many Asian resources. Forum: Habitat in Developing Countries is an internet resource aimed at providing information to researchers and professionals working for the improvement of the built environment in developing countries, and at facilitating communications among them. Here is an interesting report of proceedings from a conference on Asian inter-cities networks including environmental management.
