Office Management

The Green Guide on Trimming Your Office Waste is a well-organized website that has a lot of practical tips.  So is this Green Office Guide from New Zealand. and this one from the UK, both have neat graphics too.

Waste at Work:  Prevention Strategies for the Bottom Line is an outstanding, big,   comprehensive guide to waste minimization and conservation in departments and offices. Appropriate for all organizations but especially for large ones.  Large PDF files; AVAILABLE ON THE CDROM.

Water Conservation

The Facility Manager's Guide to Water Management is a good technical manual with many worksheets and tables of data for calculating water efficiency measures. Also includes management practices and additional resources information.  AVAILABLE ON THE CDROM.

WaterWiser is the American Waterworks Association's water conservation information center. It has a huge number of resources.

Connecting The Drops is a very interesting new tool and website designed to help large businesses build a well-tailored water strategy that fits the business' needs and circumstances. Case studies highlight ways that companies can create business value by pursuing the sustainable management of water resources. The tool enables organizations to better understand their relationship to water throughout the value chain, identify opportunities and risks, assess the business case for action, and develop and implement continual improvement-based water strategies.

Energy Conservation

The US EPA Energy Star program is perhaps the most helpful website for business and energy efficiency.  They offer the excellent manual, Putting Energy into Profits.   You can - and should - download it after visiting the site and joining the program (for free).  However non-USA organizations are not eligible to join.  But...   You can download the publication for free from this link.   AVAILABLE ON THE CDROM.

Consumer Energy Information is from the US Department of Energy and links to many resources.

The Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology has a huge collection of energy efficiency links.

The Greenhouse Gas Technology Information Exchange has a database of thousands of companies involved in greenhouse gas mitigation, which is strongly focused on energy conservation.

Vehicle Fleets

These sites have practical guides for reducing waste from vehicle repair and maintenance:

Pollution Prevention in the Auto Repair Sector is a webpage with links to excellent technical resources, fact sheets and more.

Pollution prevention guide for automotive repair shops is a good short guide.

Cleaners and Solvents

Is it toxic or dangerous?  If you live in North America, commercial cleaning products are supposed to come with Material Safety Data Sheets.  For a vast amount of information about these important resources, see Where To Find Material Safety Data Sheets on the Internet.  

The Janitorial Products Pollution Prevention Project has a lot of information about how to keep a clean and environmentally safe office.

Non-Toxic Cleaning and Holistic Health Resources and Then Some! has hundreds of tips about ways to clean around the house and office without using toxic chemicals.

Hints from Heloise is produced by the famous newspaper columnist and has information for cleaning just about anything around the house or office.

Indoor Air Quality

The US EPA Indoor Air Quality site is the largest and most informative site on this topic.

The California Indoor Air Quality Program has a big collection of resources and links.

General Manuals for Cleaner Production

All of the manuals below are available on the Greatest Hits of CP CDROM.

The Good Housekeeping Guide for Small & Medium-Sized Enterprises is an excellent guide for getting started in environmental management by improving housekeeping practices. It includes simple analysis tools and guidance with examples. Also good for larger companies.

Cleaner Production Manual for Small and Medium Enterprise provides a program for CP implementation in five modules. It includes case studies, worksheets, guides for calculations, and step-by step procedures.  The website also has lots of other good CP information.

The Small Business Waste Reduction Guide includes a brief overview of waste reduction concepts and opportunities (Section 2), brief waste reduction tip sheets (Section 3), case studies (Section 4), information on U.S. environmental regulations (Section 5), and waste reduction checklists (Section 6). Also included are a set of promotional materials, contact information, and reference lists geared mostly toward a U.S. audience.

Waste Minimization: An Environmental Good Practice Guide is a comprehensive and reasonably detailed guide covering most common aspects of operations.  It is available from the Envirowise website, which has a very large amount of CP resources.  It is necessary to register (for free) to use the website and download the publications, but it is quite worth it.
