Case Study Collections

Want to find solutions for a specific industry?  These sites maintain collections of industry-specific links, or summary publications about industry sectors.

• Pollution Prevention Resource Exchange is the home of a network of six regional Pollution Prevention centers, each of which produces comprehensive guides to various industry sectors and topics. 
  
  
• The Canadian Pollution Prevention Information Clearinghouse has a database that is searchable by sector and has over 1200 entries.
  
  
• The National Pollution Prevention Roundtable has a quick menu of industry sectors with direct download documents.
  
  
• Envirowise is the United Kingdom´s main CP / P2 site.  It has many case studies and reports on industry best practices.
  
  
• GreenPROFIT has a database of technical CP measures for about 10 industry sectors.
  
  
• P2Pays has many publications organized by industry sector, with a high-quality review process and a very large searchable database.
  
  
• The International Cleaner Production Information Clearinghouse (ICPIC) contains 441  case studies, plus CP contacts, profiles of CP related national policies and CP publications.
  
  
• Eco-Efficiency and Cleaner Production site from Environment Australia has over 200 case studies from 13 sectors
  
  
• P2Gems has a database of industries, products, chemicals and wastes, processes, and management tools.

• The US EPA Wastewise site has a collection of success stories in waste minimization from about a dozen industry sectors.

Many more cases can be found from good search engines like Google by searching for "cleaner production" "industry name", or "pollution prevention" "industry name".  It is important to use both CP and P2 in search terms since P2 is used almost exclusively in North America, and CP is used everywhere else.   If you are searching for Spanish language resources, search using "produccion mas limpia".

Industry Best Practices

These resources include general guidance for industry sectors, usually including some case studies.  The sites above also often have best practices guidance.

• The World Bank Pollution Prevention and Abatement Handbook has general guidelines for about 40 industry sectors, plus a lot of other useful information for industrial environmental management.  The International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the Bank, covers another 27 sectors.
  
  
• The US EPA Sector Notebooks are comprehensive overviews of environmental issues in about 30 major industries.  Each includes descriptions of the industry, including operations, pollutants and regulations, pollution prevention methods, and related resources.
  
  
• The European Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Bureau is producing what are probably the most comprehensive guides to industry sector environmental management.  About 15 are finished and many are still in development.
  
  
• EPA's Office of Water publishes effluent management guidelines for a number of industries. The extensive reports cover industry processes, pollution prevention, regulation development and more.
  
  
• The Australian National Pollutant Inventory Industry Handbooks are manuals for estimating emissions from about 50 types of industries.  Each handbook has detailed process descriptions, information about emission sources, and benchmarks and formulas for estimating emissions.  Very valuable to engineers.
