Sector-Specific Resources

Cleaner Production and Pollution Prevention methods were originally designed to help manufacturing companies reduce their emissions and wastes.  Since then the concepts have expanded greatly to apply to several other important sectors.  The pages in this section identify the best resources for each sector.

  • General Guide to CP and P2 for the operations of any organization, including office waste reduction, water and energy efficiency, vehicle fleets, and janitorial operations.  Includes general manuals.   For information about CP and P2 for specific business functions such as accounting, purchasing, etc., see the Tools section.

  • IndustriesThis section includes guides to case study collections organized by types of industries.  These case studies show how specific companies applied CP to reduce their pollution and save money.  It includes some pages on industries that are commonly considered to be particularly important for CP.   It also includes links to some of the best general manuals for CP implementation in industry.

  • FinanceFinancial institutions need to understand and promote CP because it reduces risk and improves cash flow from borrowers and investments.  There are several international initiatives for greening the financial sector described on this page.  For more specific information about how to do environmental accounting and financial analysis for CP, see the Measurement tools page.

  • Communities CP is particularly important for communities and local governments because, when local companies and households use CP methods, it reduces the demand on urban services such as water, energy, solid waste management and public health.  CP also applies to the daily operations of local governments.

  • Environmental Industries:  CP and P2 evolved from the environmental industries and agencies, and these remain very important for its implementation.  This page includes major web resources for the environmental industries, environmental news sources, and environmental industry and technology periodicals and newsletters.

  • Education: Educational institutions can use CP in their daily operations, but also they have a very important role in providing training and doing research on CP.  This page includes a section on CP for campus operations, and a guide to leading CP education programs around the world.

  • Development:  Many international development programs now actively promote CP as part of their environmental assistance efforts.  This is expanding to link to economic development and other areas.  In many developing countries, the major CP activities are funded by foreign donors.  This page provides links to the major international development websites and resources, and to the CP programs of some major foreign assistance agencies.

  • Sustainable Cities:   Cities have special needs.  This page has links to sustainable cities programs around the world.
