July 17, 2006:   Sustainable Business Networking Event at UCLA

New groups are are popping up all over LA this year.  Here is the UCLA sustainable biz networking invitation and thanks to the 40+ people who attended.  GreenLAGirl's blog has pictures and comments.  Thanks to Prof. Charles Corbett of UCLA Anderson School of Management for hosting us.  UCLA has many resources to help organizations become more sustainable.  And there are brand new groups to help: The Sustainable Business Council, SustainableLA.org, Net Impact, LA Green Living and even Green Drinks for "those" days.

Local Government - Who Can Help You Today

-- I wonder how much City and County of LA spend to promote "green" business, and how effective is it? --

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power "Green LA" programs include Trees, Energy Efficiency, Solar Energy, Electric Vehicles, Green Power, Recycling and Educational Services.

The Los Angeles Environmental Affairs Department maintains an environmental reference service via its Environmental Information Center (EIC) that responds to environmentally-related inquiries. It also has many programs and services.

Los Angeles County Dept of Public Works Clean LA has many online and direct services.  They also maintain a great list of relevant links.

The Los Angeles County Online Materials Exchange is a free service designed to help residents, businesses, and organizations in Los Angeles County find markets for their industrial by-products, surplus materials, and other would-be discards.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board Local Assistance Contacts has a database for every town in California it seems with the people you can call for local help.  It's an amazing resource - try it out.

Local Recycling contacts for all LA region can help you find resources

Cal EPA Science, Pollution Prevention and Technology Program has experts working in a variety of areas to help business reduce pollution.

Sustainable Works is the City of Santa Monica's sustainable business program.

The Western Regional Pollution Prevention Network is a strategic alliance involving local, state, federal and tribal pollution prevention (P2) programs.  It is a member of the Pollution Prevention Resource Exchange, a national network of eight centers providing pollution prevention information, networking opportunities and other services.

LA Networking Organizations

LA Green Drinks is a monthly networking and social event for anyone concerned about environmental issues to get together over a drink.  Events are hosted by different organizations each month.  West Side Green Drinks is 1st Thursday of every month. East Side Green Drinks is 3rd Thursday of every month. T

The Sustainable Business Council is a new non-profit organization founded by a group of sustainable business executives. They serve Los Angeles regional businesses and individuals working with sustainable products, services and processes.

The Net Impact Los Angeles Professional Chapter will bring together local professionals seeking to network and take action to foster a new generation of leaders who use the power of business to create a better world.  Net Impact is a global organization of conscious business school students and alumni.  The chapter of Net Impact at USC Marshall School of Business and at UCLA Anderson School of Business

The US Green Building Council Los Angeles Chapter  represents over 400 individuals committed to making their communities better places to live through smarter planning, better public policy, and greener development.

The California Association of Environmental Professionals is a non-profit organization of professionals working to improve skills as environmental practitioners and natural resource managers.   The Los Angeles Chapter holds regular events.

Fair Trade LA is people who are working for proactive, ideal/realistic solutions in a global movement for social and environmental justice. Participants include students from all over the Los Angeles area, individuals, members of Faith Based organizations, Oxfam America, and others.

GreenLAGirl is a blog covering things of interest to its author, a sustainability fan and poet.

SustainableLA.org is a new website / network.

LA Green Living is a new website and business connecting the sustainability crowd in LA.

Prof. Charles Corbett at the UCLA Anderson School of Management is one of the best-qualified professors studying sustainable business in the region, and he leads the UCLA "Green Lights" discussions about green practices in the motion picture and TV industries.

J. Michael Huls at Huls Environmental has been working with many organizations in Southern Cal for years and maintains a good list of links oriented around recycling. 

Action Organizations

Founded in 1991, the South Bay Business Environmental Coalition has two main areas of focus: K-12 environmental education and the stewardship of positive and innovative environmental practices by Los Angeles area businesses.

Sea Change is a non-profit advocacy firm working to promote environmentally sustainable business on behalf of business and corporate interests.  Based in San Francisco but covering California and beyond.

The World Business Academy was founded in 1987 as a research and education institution to help the global business community understand and participate in the new constructive role of business in society.  It has offices in Ojai and San Francisco.

The California Sustainable Business Council is an evolving statewide coalition of organizations working to promote and develop sustainable businesses.

Environment California is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization based in Santa Monica.

Win-Win Partners are companies and organizations achieving competitive advantage through community investment. Win-Win Partners also include national organizations that assist companies with successful execution of these strategies by providing them with valuable services such as research and market data, brokering, networking opportunities with other executives, and years of professional experience in this field. Win-Win Partners are an outgrowth of the Ford Foundation Corporate Involvement Initiative and is based in Los Angeles.

The Environmental Media Association (EMA) mobilizes the entertainment industry in a global effort to educate people about environmental issues and inspire them into action.

Earth Resource Foundation offers business advisory services, events and campaigns for environmental awareness.

Eco-Home is a community resource center of information and guidance in the subject of ecological urban living for individuals, businesses and government agencies.

UCLA Sustainable Resource Center coordinates and promotes activities on campus.  UCLA’s Institute of the Environment is home to five research centers, including The Coastal Center; the Center for Tropical Research; the Urban Center for People and the Environment; the Southern California Particle Center and Supersite; and the Center for Air Pollution and Exposure. Since 1998, the IoE has sponsored an annual Southern California Environmental Report Card.  And there is a new "Leadership in Sustainability" interdisciplinary graduate program established.

TreePeople promotes urban forestry in LA region.

North of LA, the Santa Barbara Community Environmental Council is the most active organization for sustainable business in the county.
