In 1997 Burton became a professor at the
Asian Institute of Management, the leading graduate business school in
SE Asia, where the students in his course on Cleaner Production conducted a CP assessment
of the Institute facilities. This began a process that led in 2000 to the AIM
obtaining ISO 14001 for its
Environmental Management System, the only business school in the world
to have this certification (as far as we know). In late 1998 Burton moved back to Seattle,
Washington and became an independent consultant working for
the Asian Development Bank and the Government of Thailand.
Burton moved in 2002 with his family to Lima, Peru, where he
became a
professor at the Universidad de Pacifico (UP) in the
Department of Accounting. In October 2003 he helped launch the new Centro de Contabilidad y Desempeņo Sostenible
(Center for Sustainable Accounting and Development) in the
Department. He taught Cleaner Production
courses and developing various CP projects in Peru, and also continued
consultancies around the world.
He also prepared a major report on socially responsible
investment and its potential for Peru and other developing countries.
He returned to Seattle in 2004.
